Dip Powder FAQ

What is dip powder?

Dip powder is a system of powders and glazes that are used to create a natural, lightweight and strong nail enhancement. Dip powder can be used on both your natural nails or on an artificial tip to create an extension. Our #1 Best Selling Dip powders are finely milled which makes them perfect for achieving a smooth, even application. Plus they come in a wide variety of highly-pigmented colors, which means the design possibilities are endless! Dip Powder is also formulated without harsh chemicals and has added vitamins and calcium to strengthen the nails without damaging the nail bed. Want to learn more about Dip Powder? Check out our Dip Powder 101 Post.

What is the difference between Dip Powder and Acrylic?

Dip Powders and acrylics might have similar polymers but we assure you, they are not the same thing! While acrylic requires monomer to activate, dip powder is activated with glazes so it has absolutely no need for monomer and it's odorless! Perfect for those who want a more natural alternative but don’t want to sacrifice having fabulous nails!

You might also notice that dip powder application is MUCH thinner than acrylic application. Although thinner, dip powder has the same structure and just as much strength as acrylic. The thin structure of dip powder makes it feel like natural nails, but even stronger! Not to mention, dip powder application is faster than traditional acrylic.

How to apply Dip Powder

Dip Powder is applied through a series of glazes that help the powder adhere to the nail. The great thing about dip powders is that they are activated with our Seal & Protect Glaze so no monomer or UV/LED curing is needed. We have full-length tutorials available on our Learn blog page and on our Kiara Sky Nail YouTube channel.

How long does Dip Powder last?

Dip Powder’s complex bonds keep nails from chipping, discoloring, and lifting. If applied correctly, a dip powder set can last anywhere from 3-4 weeks without chipping or lifting! Pretty amazing, right?

How to remove Dip Powder?

Dip Powder is extremely easy to remove. All you have to do to remove your set of Dip Powder nails is file away the shine so that you can soak your nails in acetone for 10-15 minutes and it will come right off. If you don’t want to remove a dip powder completely, it's super easy to do a fill using Dip as well!

Can I apply Gel Polish on top of Dip Powder

You sure can!

My dip powder top coat doesn't look shiny, how do I apply it properly?

It’s super important to remember that your Seal & Protect will activate your dip powder, but it will also activate your top coat and make it shiny! If there is too much Seal & Protect on the nail surface, the Top Coat can activate too fast and cause it to have a cloudy or matte finish. Don't worry if this is happening to you. There's a quick fix to ensure you have the shiniest finish possible, just follow these simple steps:

After filing and shaping, make sure you apply a second layer of Seal & Protect and thoroughly rub the nail with a lint-free wipe. This will push the Seal & Protect into the nail and remove any excess from the nail surface to ensure you get the shiniest top coat! If you don’t rub the nail, the Top Coat will come into contact with the Seal & Protect and activate, which can also cause your brush to harden. If this happens, simply replace your brush BEFORE returning it to the bottle, else the product inside will activate and your bottle will be ruined:(

My Dip Base and Top are glued shut, how can I prevent this from happening?

We know how big of a tragedy this is and we're so sorry you're experiencing this problem with your Dip Powder Essentials. There are a few steps you can take to ensure this never happens again but please DO NOT try to force the bottles open.  Our bottles are made out of glass and can cause serious injuries if they're forced open. To ensure your Dip Essentials last as long as possible, follow these steps:

1. Before storing away your Kiara Sky Dip essentials, make sure you clean your bottles well with acetone or alcohol. This will help you prevent product buildup around the lid which could dry making your product nearly impossible to open.

2. Nail hack! Take your Nourish Oil, bottle #5, and apply it to the neck and rim of your Dip Base and Top to make them easier to open for your next use.

Hack: If your bottle is glued shut and you are unable to open it, we recommend soaking it in warm water for 10-15 minutes. If you are still unable to open your bottles, please DO NOT try to force them open.

My Dip Base and Top look gummy/stringy, what am I doing wrong?

It’s super important to remember that your Seal & Protect will activate your Dip Powder Base and Top Coat. This means if your Top Coat brush or Base brush comes into contact with Seal & Protect it will activate and your brush will harden. If this happens and you return the brush to the bottle, the rest of the product will activate and your bottle will be ruined.

In order to avoid this, make sure you are following these steps:

After filing and shaping, make sure you apply a second layer of Seal & Protect and thoroughly rub the nail with a lint-free wipe. This will push the Seal & Protect into the nail and remove any excess from the nail surface to ensure your Top Coat brush doesn't come into contact with it.

If you don’t rub the nail, the Top Coat will come into contact with the Seal & Protect and activate.

If this happens, simply replace your brush BEFORE returning it to the bottle with a brush replacement.

Can I use Nail Lacquer with Gelly Tips

Absolutely! Top off your Gelly Tips with your favorite nail lacquer or gel polish color!

Can I customize the shape and length of my Gelly Tips?

You can certainly shape Gelly Tips to perfectly fit your nail bed, if needed. You can also trim down your Gelly Tips to make them a little bit shorter, however, keep in mind that this could alter the appearance or the shape of your tips. We do not recommend cutting too much length off of our long Gelly Tips as this could minimize the strength.

Can I use Gelly Tips without a nail e-file/drill?

Absolutely, we have a hack that will ensure your Gelly Tips are properly prepped and ready to application, without a nail drill! Instead of using a nail file to rough the inside of the Gelly Tips, apply a little bit of Primer #2 to the area that will come into contact with the nail bed, and allow it to dry for 2-4 minutes or until the inside of the Gelly Tips becomes tacky. Follow all other steps as normal and use a buffer block to remove the shine from the surface of the Gelly Tip before applying gel or lacquer.

I have a flatter nail bed, will Gelly Tips still work for me?

Definitely!  We have a few tips to help to achieve this gorgeous nail extension you’re after:

First off, when sizing the tip to the nail bed, you may find it useful to file the Gelly Tip down around the cuticle area for a better fit. All hands are different, and although KS Gelly Tips are perfectly shaped, some Gelly Tips wearers prefer the fit of the tips when they fit comfortably on their nail bed.

Second, we recommend a generous amount of Builder gel. You'll need a good amount of Builder cured to the natural nail and well as on the underside of the Gelly tip and press and hold firmly while curing. This will help seal the space between a flatter nail bed and the slight curve of the Gelly Tip.

How do I remove Gelly Tips?

Removing your Gelly Tips is quick, easy, and painless! Simply follow these steps:

1. Trim down the nail as much as possible with a nail cutter.

2. Remove the shiny layer from the Gelly Tips with a nail file or e-file.

3. Soak a cotton ball in acetone and place it directly on the nail.

4. Wrap your fingers in foil and allow 10-15 minutes for the product to dissolve.

5. Remove the excess product from the nail bed, wash your hands and moisturize.

That's it, bestie! Now you're ready for a fresh new Gelly Tips set!

Can I do a fill on Gelly Tips?

Ready for a new look? You don't have to soak off your Gelly Tips! Filling your Gelly tips is super easy and one of the many reasons why we LOVE the Gelly Tips system. You can fill your Gelly Tips by following these steps:

1.  Lightly file your Gelly Tips and your new nail growth then apply Prep and Primer to the natural nail growth.

2. Fill the growth with Builder Gel, building up the nail in thin layers and curing after each one. Pay extra attention to the cuticle area and drag the excess product to the end of your tip.

3. Cure, and then voila! Your Gelly Tips manicure is filled!

4. Finish off with a new coat of your favorite lacquer or gel polish!

 Gel Polish FAQ

What is the difference between your Color Base Gel Polishes and your Jelly Gel Polishes?

Our Jelly Collection is an exclusive collection featuring 16 vibrant sheer (or jelly) colors to take you back to the 90’s or add a splash of fun to your life! They're what we call a "buildable sheer" which means you can do 1 or 2 coats for a sheer look or layer more coats until you get your desired vibrancy and coverage! Our Jelly Polishes are all sheer, whereas our Color Base original collection has a mix of creams, glitters, shimmers, sheers, and satins.

What is the best way to store gel polish?

Polish is heat and light sensitive, so if it’s exposed to undesirable temperatures there is a possibility that your gel polish could get clumpy and cure in the bottle. If you love our product as much as we do keep it safe from clumping! Make sure you’re storing your polishes in a dry and cool area.

How does the Ombré (mood changer polish) work?

We all get a little moody once in a while, right? So why not make it colorful?! There are 44 playful shades that change color based on your body temperature, your mood, the heat of your coffee cup, or even while you’re holding an ice cold smoothie. This collection is sure to be one of your absolute favorites!
